The 112 day is observed every year on 11 February. The purpose of this day is to heighten public awareness about safety-related issues.

This year’s focus was on the correct use of the emergency number, with a particular emphasis on educating children and young people. Children and adolescents might feel scared or unsure about calling 112. Therefore, it is advisable to practice with children, teaching them what to do in an emergency and how to call 112.

When to Call the Emergency Number?

You should call 112 when:

  • You encounter an emergency or urgently need help from authorities (the police, emergency medical services, social and rescue services).
  • You know or suspect that someone’s life, health, property, or the environment is at risk.

Do not hesitate to call 112. You do not need to know what to say about the emergency before you call. The operator will guide you and ask you questions.

There have been instance where people hesitated to call when it was needed. Conversely, some calls are made without a sufficient reason.

Do not call 112 for:

  • General questions or advice.
  • Disturbances like power outages, unless they pose a direct threat to life.
  • Non-urgent health issues that do not constitute an immediate emergency. For less urgent matters, consider contacting the HUS Medical Helpline at 116117 for advice.

Assess whether you can manage the situation yourself before calling 112. If you are unsure, please err on the side of caution and make the call.

We also recommend downloading the 112 app on your smartphone and familiarizing yourself with its features. It offers extensive contact details and instructions for a variety of scenarios.
