The year is changing soon - please use fireworks safely!
The Uusimaa Rescue Departments urge users of fireworks to pay special attention to local weather conditions and safe fireworks use. Up-to-date warnings can be checked on the Finnish Meteorological Institute's website.
The use of fireworks is allowed from December 31, 2023, at 18:00 to January 1, 2024, at 02:00. The location for shooting fireworks should be chosen carefully. Strong winds should be considered by increasing safety distances from people, buildings, and vehicles.
Firework rockets should be launched from a stable surface so that the wind cannot topple them or change the direction of the rockets. Wind conditions should also be taken into account when aiming the rockets. Firework pads should be well supported, for example, with stones or snow to prevent tipping.
Bring joy safely with fireworks! Here's a checklist for fireworks users:
- Only individuals aged 18 and above are allowed to possess and use fireworks.
- Familiarize yourself with the instructions for using fireworks in advance and follow them carefully. Use only approved fireworks with the CE marking.
- Save the consumption of celebratory drinks until after using fireworks; shoot rockets sober.
- Fireworks can be used on New Year's night between 18:00 and 02:00.
- Emergency flares should not be used as fireworks, as they can cause unnecessary searches, especially near bodies of water.
- Use a sturdy stand for launching rockets and adequately support pads with snow or stones.
- The user of fireworks is obliged to clean up the resulting waste and compensate for any damage caused.
- Do not attempt to relight a firework if it fails. Wait at least 10 minutes at the specified safety distance before approaching the firework.
- Consider pets and domestic animals: the loud noise from fireworks can cause fear in animals.
- Remember to use safety glasses, and we recommend safety glasses for spectators as well! Pay attention to the product information for fireworks, especially safety distances.
If you go to watch a fireworks display, allow enough time for travel and be prepared for traffic jams. Prefer public transportation.
Fireworks usage prohibition areas vary by rescue area, so remember to check restrictions for your area. Restrictions are often imposed, for example, near culturally historic buildings, in downtown areas, and in industrial zones. Restrictions in Western Uusimaa on New Year's:
- in the center of Hanko, fireworks are allowed only at Regattaranta (beach near the Freedom Statue).
- In the center of Tammisaari, fireworks can only be fired in the areas of Södra Viken, Ormnäs strand, Knipnäs strand, Handelshamnen, Stallörsparken.
- In Sammatti, the use of fireworks is prohibited within a 300-meter radius of the church, and
- in Karjaa, fireworks are prohibited near the railway station. Fireworks are not allowed in industrial areas.
