Contract fire brigades carry out rescue missions across some 90% of Finland’s surface area. Around 46% of Finns live in this area.

In other areas (the largest cities), contract fire brigades primarily support full-time fire brigades and provide a reserve resource in case of extensive or simultaneous situations. Contract fire brigade crews participate in approximately 46% of the annual rescue service emergency missions.

Contract fire brigade

Contract fire brigade means a voluntary fire brigade, an industrial fire brigade or a military fire brigade belonging to the rescue system which has concluded a contract with the rescue department  to provide fire-fighting and rescue services.

Voluntary activities

Volunteer organisations, associations and individuals may be used in rescue services training, advisory and awareness-raising missions, but not in missions involving a significant exercise of official authority, such as inspection or control activities.
