In the event of an accident or emergency, the office-holder leading the rescue activities, assisted by a Rescue Department communication specialists where necessary, is responsible for communication and for warning the general public.

The Rescue Department’s Twitter account, @stadinbrankkari, is a key channel for operative accident communication. Additionally, the Rescue Department communicates in other social media channels and by publishing press releases. Depending on the accident scope, information on rescue activities is provided to the media by the officer in charge of the rescue activities, the on-duty Fire Officer working in the situation centre, or the designated communication contact persons.
For general questions about fire safety, media is advised to contact the on-duty Fire Inspector on weekdays between 9–11 and 12–14 on +358 9 310 31203. The on-duty Fire Inspector is also available between 9–15 by email at palotarkastaja@hel.fi.
In an accident, the authority for managing the incident initially rests with the Rescue Department. When the authority for managing the incident transfers to some other public authority, the authority for managing the related communication activities will also transfer. The cooperation between the public authorities managing the incident also covers communication and, in all situations, the Rescue Department provides communication on its own activities.
