Finland provides material assistance to Ukraine’s rescue services
The Ministry of the Interior has procured 50,000 litres of foam suitable for extinguishing different types of fires for use by Ukraine’s rescue services. The foam purchase is part of an emergency assistance package coordinated by the Ministry through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The package consists of donations from various sectors of society and targeted procurements.
Ministry of the Interior commissions report on development needs for public warning system
The Ministry of the Interior has commissioned the Emergency Services Academy Finland to prepare a report on the current state and development needs of the fixed public warning system. The report will be completed in December 2026.
Finnish and Ukrainian rescue authorities support Ukraine's international civil defence coalition
The Finnish Ministry of the Interior and the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU) have agreed to deepen cooperation across different sectors. The cooperation emphasises support for Ukraine's international civil defence coalition.
Responsibility for smoke alarms to transfer to building owners on 1 January 2026
The obligation to purchase and maintain smoke alarms will be transferred from the resident to the owner of the building on 1 January 2026. Building owners, that is housing companies and rental housing companies, have made good use of the two-year transition period following the amendments to the Rescue Act and have taken the necessary measures in good time.

The Rescue Department asks everyone to pay attention to the safe charging of lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries.
The alarm system will be tested again on 4 April
This is an ordinary monthly test of the alarm system. The test helps with detecting potential faults in the alarm equipment.

The situation in Ukraine is causing concern and the rescue department has received many inquiries regarding civil defence shelters.
Information for building owners – public safety network to be upgraded
In buildings and structures that currently contain equipment ensuring the operability of the public safety network, the operability of the public authority communication service referred to in section 109 (15.7.2021/739) of the Rescue Act (379/2011) must also be ensured.

Rescue authorities found shortcomings in the fire safety and provision of safe egress in shops
Uusimaa rescue departments conducted control visits at various shops between November 22 and December 1, 2021. This was the second time control was implemented in cooperation between the Uusimaa rescue departments. In total, the control visits covered 197 shops around Uusimaa. Rescue authorities focused particularly on the fire safety and provision of safe egress.
Rescue departments inspect shops in Uusimaa
Rescue departments in the Uusimaa region will carry out inspection visits to commercial premises in their areas during the holiday shopping season. In particular, the inspections will focus on the safety of exit routes in shops and stores.
Residents interested in the safety of their detached houses in Western Uusimaa
Last summer, the Western Uusimaa Rescue Department sent a fire safety self-assessment form to some of the residents of detached houses in its area. This year, the letter was sent to approximately 5,200 households.

The wellbeing services county of Western Uusimaa will start operating in 2023.
The new website of the Länsi-Uusimaa Rescue Department has been published
The new website of the Länsi-Uusimaa Rescue Department has been published on the pelastustoimi.fi platform as part of the Rescue Services’ project aimed at harmonising its online communication. Most of Finland’s 22 rescue departments will transfer their websites to the joint platform.
